Regulations on shipping companies pursuant to the Merchant Shipping Act have been issued on 30th April 2004 and have entered into force on the 1st May 2004. A Maltese company established for the purpose of registering a vessel under the Malta flag is formed with a minimum of:

500 shares of €2.33 each, of which a minimum of 20% is paid up or the equivalent in any recognised currency.
